There are various pieces of equipment in Pilates, dozens of exercises on each piece of equipment, numerous modifications for each exercise, various accessories can be utilized with each exercise. The combinations are almost endless, resulting in hundreds of exercises to keep your body toned and fit and your mind busy. Countless workouts and curriculae can be created for a body with all these exercises but it's not just about the exercises. It is about the person inside the body.
Mathematics has allowed Lani to develop her analytical skills. Problem solving, research and teaching afforded her the chance to hone those skills. Teaching students with poor attitudes towards a subject (mathematics) has given her an appreciation of the importance of learning about the person she's helping and developing a rapport with them, not just reciting information to them. Working with a universal language, mathematics, has also given her the opportunity to work with, and learn from, people from varying generations, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This includes educational philosophy. Studies and research can keep a body behind a desk and computer for long hours. Lani can empathize with bodies that are captured behind a desk and computer for extended hours, having spent many years so herself. In her personal experience, being involved in various activities from cycling to cross country skiing, to working out at the gym to aerobics classes, the value of exercising and moving a body are apparent. This has led her to more studies in the pursuit of certification as a personal trainer and fitness class instructor from Can-Fit Pro to currently, Pilates instructor certification from Stott Pilates.
Lani was drawn to Pilates by several factors. One was the feeling she found she had after an hour of Pilates exercises. It was different from any other activity she had tried. Muscles had been worked and were fatigued but she wasn't exhausted. In fact, Lani found that she still had energy, and more in some cases than at the start of a Pilates session. Pilates was also a nice compliment to all the other activities she was involved in. Just one full hour of Pilates a week amongst all the other activities in just a couple of months produced a noticeable difference in how her clothes fit, how she stood and how she breathed.

In 2006 Ferial experienced a knee injury due to a torn ligament. After extensive and intensive physiotherapy, daily exercise, not only was a new lifestyle created but she regained the use and mobility of her knee. Throughout her rehabilitation she researched other remedies for knee injuries. Acupuncture, yoga and Pilates were all possibilities. Continued research into Pilates and Ferial's scientific background convinced her that Pilates was both a viable form of rehabilitation and preventative exercise. Impressed with what Pilates has to offer to the general community Ferial decided to become involved with Pilates Patio.
Ferial has many years of experience. Among them include experience as a scientist, teacher and researcher. She has been involved in festival and event planning and coordinating, fundraising for scientific purposes, community research and health charities including the Celebration of Life and Green Ribbon among numerous others. With her multidisciplinary experiences, expertise and excellence in management Pilates Patio is optimistic that Ferial will help make Pilates and its benefits more accessible, affordable and attainable for the majority of the public.
