Q:How often should I do Pilates?

A: As often as you like. If you enjoy Pilates and want to do it every day, a program can be created for you to allow that. If this is not feasible then once a week is great. Two or three hours of exercises a week is preferable but this does not have to be Pilates alone. Initially, it is a bit slow but this is to be expected with any new exercise or movement. In time as familiarity with the exercises and techniquesdevelops the pace of the workout will pick up and also the ability to learn new exercises. Personally, I find it takes about 3-4 sessions, one a week, to gain some comfort with the exercises, techniques and the style of instruction found when doing Pilates.

Q:What should I wear?

A:Wear comfortable clothes. Regular workout clothes that allow for stretching. Shoes are not required so socks or bare feet are fine.

Q:I don't want to develop bulky muscles. Will this happen with Pilates?

A:While there is resistance training available in Pilates it will not result in bulk. But rather lean muscles and a toner look. There are many exercises that involve stretching in Pilates and that combines with the resistance will help result in elongating the muslces rather than creating muslce mass and thus that bulky look. One of the results of Pilates is muscular endurance. Again, the result being leaner, more muscular endurance strength.

Q:Will Pilates help me loose weight?

A:Any and all activity will help you loose weight.

Q:I want a total body workout. Will I get that with Pilates?

A:Yes. With Pilates you will be able to target all the muscle groups and work in all planes of movement. As well as work on coordination, flexibility, balance and even a little bit of cardio if you use the jumpboard.

Q:If I do Pilates three times a week, do I need to do any other exercise?

A:Pilates is very good and will target all areas, as mentioned above. However, to get a complete workout some cardiovascular exercise should be included which can be done through brisk walking, running, cycling, swimming, skiing and many other ways.

Q:What is a reformer?

A:A reformer is one of the various pieces of equipment or apparatus used in Pilates. It is probably the most versitile piece of equipment in Pilates.
Top

Q:Is the reformer more advanced?

A:Neither mat nor reformer are more or less advanced than the other. They are complimentary to each other. There are various other pieces of equipment used in Pilates. We have chosen to focus on matwork and reformer work because they are the most condusive to a group setting but also can be easily adapated to allow for private, more specialized and/or rehabilitative work whill preparing the client to participate in a group class from time to time. Feel free to have a look at the other pieces of equipment that Pilates has to offer.

Q:Do you have classes of different levels?

A:The beauty of Pilates is that the exercises can be modified to allow a person of any level of fitness perform the exercise or a version of it. As a result we do not have levels. Not everyone who comes to the studio has the same fitness level or exercise history. As a result, the rate at which any one person will progress and/or pick up the exercises and subtlities of Pilates is different. As a result we do not have levels. However, we do require each person that comes to the studio take a introductory session with us so that you get used to how we teach and how the studio is run and we get to know how you learn best. After this together we will decide how best to procede, whether individualized sessions, group sessions or a combination of the two.

Q:I have done very little Pilates. So I'm definately a beginner. Will I be able to join a class?

A:After you have done your introductory session you will have a better idea of how you feel about Pilates, your comfort with the exercises etc. and we will have a better idea of how you learn, how quickly you pick things up etc. Together we will determine how best to procede based on your goals and needs.

Q:I've done Pilates before. Will I get a workout in the class?

A:As there are no assigned 'levels' to classes and all exercises have modifications to suit the individual, yes, you will get a workout. Keep in mind that Pilates is not a cardiovascular workout so you will not burn as many calories as if you were doing something more cardiovascular or fat burning such as running or skipping. Pilates also isn't intended to build bulk so feeing that "burn" that you may feel while lifting weights in a gym isn't the goal either. The essence of Pilates is to work from the inside out, trying to engage deeper and smaller muscles in the body, focusing on stability, posture and muscular endurance.

Depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy and what your present activity level is, consult your doctor. If you have no previous history of health problems, are in good physical condition and are currently active, there is no reason why you cannot participat in Pilates. As you progress throughout your pregnancy, new and different exercises will be added and/or changed. Have a look at what our past clients' experiences have been with pregnancy and pilates.
