Hip and Knee

Muscle Origin Insertion Action
Sartorius anterior, superior, iliac spine (ASIS) anterior, medial surface of tibia below condyle flexes, laterally rotates and abducts thigh
Gracilis anterior part of lower half of symphysis pubis anterior medial surface of tibia below condyle adducts and medially rotates thigh
Biceps Femoris -- -- --
long head ischial tuberosity lateral side of fibula; lateral condly eof tibia flexion, lateral rotation of leg at knee; extends, adducts and laterally rotates thigh at hip
short head lateral part of femur -- --
Semitendinosus (medial hamstring) ischial tuberosity anterior, medial surface of tibia below condyle flexes, medially rotates leg at knee; extends, adducts, medially rotates thigh at hip
Semimembranosus (medial hamstring) upper, lateral part of ischial tuberosity posterior part of medial condyle of tibia flexes, medially rotates leg at knee; extends, adducts, medially rotates thigh at hip
Rectus Femoris -- -- --
straight head anterior, inferior iliac spine (ASIS) upper part of patella, tibial tuberosity extension of leg at knee; flexion of thigh at hip
reflected head acetabulum -- --
Vastus lateralis anterior and lower borders of greater trochanter lateral border of patella extends leg at knee; draws patella laterally
Vastus medialis ? medial border of patella extends leg at knee; draws patella medially
Vastus intermedius proximal two thirds of anterior, lateral part of femur superior border of patella extends leg at knee
Popliteus lateral condyle of femur posterior surface of tibia rotates tibia medially on femur or rotates femur laterally on tibia depending on which is fixed
